What Your Gift Will Do

Your gift will support athletic scholarships for children with financial needs in Novato, California so that they may lead healthy, strong, and happy lives.

Our Story

NovatoSpirit was founded in 2005 by Marian Schinske. The organization serves Novato's low-income children who have little access to healthy after-school sports, due to the expense of most sports programs. Local pediatricians, physical therapists, mental health workers and social workers are happy that NovatoSpirit was founded because they are now able to refer to us many of their clients who have chronic issues such as diabetes, asthma, depression, and anxiety that improve with regular exercise.

Over the many years of NovatoSpirit's existence, we have heard success stories from the children who benefit from the scholarship. The children have reported that they become stronger, healthier and more optimistic. We have also seen children in our programs have their grades improved at school. Our efforts have been commended by the Novato community, and we have been nominated for the award "Achievement in Nonprofit Excellence" for 10 years at the largest annual gathering of Marin County nonprofits, the Heart of Marin Awards.

Our Leadership

"Besides being the founder of NovatoSpirit, I am also the Champion. I feel honored to play a small part of One World's mission to benefit the lives of children in poverty all over the world. I am passionate about NovatoSpirit, because I see real, lasting health benefits in the children we serve in Novato. We have homeless children, and kids affected by serious health problems, such as chronic pancreatitis, motor-skill difficulties, scoliosis, asthma, obesity, diabetes, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other difficulties. What each child learns to do is to move through their difficulties one step at a time, one day at a time. They learn that they can progress, despite their limitations. They see that they can achieve a lot with their bodies and minds, frail though they may be. And so they become more at ease with themselves, and more willing to try new things."
